To be honest, I had no idea what endorphins were until I did a bit of research into natural healing. After doing the research and putting a few things into action, I have realised the astonishing power endorphins have in relation to overall health and happiness.

What Are Endorphins?

Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates, designed to relieve stress and enhance pleasure and happiness. These endorphins are chemicals that are released in your brain during certain activities. There are various ways to release endorphins and here are a few that I live by.

1. Exercise

This is a quick, effective, and long-lasting way to increase your production of endorphins. All types of exercise cause endorphins to be released into your bloodstream, considerably improving your mood. You can release endorphins by doing any physical activity. Regardless of how fit or able you are, just get your heart rate up by exerting yourself and you will see the benefits immediately. This works so well for managing pain, stress or anxiety. Don’t be afraid of movement. Our bodies want to exercise so don’t let your mind scare you away from a powerful, natural pain reliever.

2. Sexual Healing

As Marvin Gaye once said, “When you get that feeling, you need sexual healing” 🙂

Being intimate with someone releases endorphins that make you feel incredible. You have the combined feeling of love plus the benefits of physical touch and the endorphin rush of having an orgasm. Having sex will boost your happiness right away. So without further a do, “Let’s Marvin Gaye and get it on folks”:)

3. Laughter

Find more reasons to laugh. It’s an everyday, immediate way to give yourself an endorphin rush. The act of laughing stimulates the production of endorphins and helps you feel good instantly. Laughter helps to relieve stress and has many other physical and emotional benefits. Try to smile more often and make it real. This also releases endorphins which will help get you on your way to euphoria.

4. Chocolate

Have you ever noticed how eating chocolate seems to give you a mood boost when you’re feeling a little low? That’s because it releases endorphins that help you relax. I eat some chocolate every evening as it allows me to wind my body and mind down after a busy day. My recreational drug is doing lines of chocolate bars 🙂. I eat about one full line of a large chocolate bar each night, and it has great relaxing affects.

5. Music

Music is possibly the most effective medium that can be used for releasing endorphins. Have you ever felt rough and down on the way to work, and then put on your favourite song? You can turn a frown upside down instantly with a bit of music you love. This happy, energised and relaxed feeling that you get from your favourite song is your body releasing endorphins. My daily routine always includes a bit of hip hop music (‘Straight outa Sligo, crazy mothaf*cka named Mike Q’ :)) because it makes me feel brilliant. Choose your favourite genre, listen to more music and see what it can do for you.

All of the above are fantastic for releasing endorphins which make you feel better when you are in pain, stressed or anxious. The human body is an amazing machine and it is absolutely unbelievable that we can initiate the production of a “happy” hormone with a few simple actions. Give a few of these a go and see if they help.

I started YogaHub out of a room at the back of someone else's house back in 2012 with nothing more than an idea. I'd been teaching Yoga since 2008 and had no intention of opening a Yoga Studio. I think, like everything I've done, I just decided one day I was going to give it a try. And try I did and if you're reading this I guess I'm still trying.
